IFL Mohegan Sun Live-Blog

FightTicker.com is live at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, where the IFL is holding its latest event tonight. Live coverage begins at about 7:30 PM ET.

In the first fight, Frank Latina vs. John Franchi, the fight went down to the ground quickly, Franchi used good wrestling and jiu jitsu to take Latina's back, and secured the rear naked choke midway thru the 1st round.

Aaron Stark vs. Lamont Lister

Stark out of Team Quest came out quick looking to strike, but Lister took the fight to the ground. Both fighters wrestled on the ground looking to secure position, but with nothing big for the first few minutes. Stark had a guillotine choke but Lister popped out, and hit a few shots to Stark's face. The fight made its way back to the feet in the clinch, Stark nailed Lister with a few knees that seemed to faze Lister at the end of the round.

Rd 1, 10-9 Stark

Both fighters meet at the center of the ring before Stark shoots in for a takedown. Lister sprawls initially, but eventually is on his back and locked in guard. Aaron is attempting some ground and pound, with no damage being made. Lister rolls onto his knees with Stark keeping the pressure on trying to secur a gator roll choke. Lamont defends the choke and rolls back onto his back. Stark is trying to rain bombs but Lister keeps him in close. Ref Dan Miragliotta stands the fighters up with just over a miute to go in the round. Stark lands a solid right hand, then the fighters clinch up against the ropes. Starks trips Lister into the corner, and rains down a few left hands as the round ends

Rd 2, 10-9 Stark

Stark hits Lister with a series of punches that dlrop him into the corner. Aaron hit him with 8-10 more shots, ad the fight was close to being stopped. Lister did a good job keeping the space close so Miragliotta stood them both up. Stark got the take down in the middle of the ring, but Lister has a triangle choke, but it isn't locked all the way. After about 30 seconds of not action, Miragliotta stands them back up with about 1 minute to fight. Both fighters clinch against the ropes, with Stark once again getting the takedown. In side control, Aaron lands a few knees to Lister's midsection.

John Howard vs. Nick Calandrino- 170 Lbs.

Both fighters size each other up, Nick goes left head kick but is blocked. Calandrino takes a shot, and gets the takedown, in open guard. Howard postures out but gives up his back. Nick lands a few shots to the head, and puts the hooks in. He couldn't get the choke, but slammed Howard to the mat. Nick, now in side control, doesn't do too much before Howard locks in guard. Each guy lands a few shots, but not too much action until Miragliotta stand them up with 40 seconds left in the round. They clinch near the ropes, Nick lands a knee but John slams him down as time expires.

Rd 1, 10-9 Calandrino

Same as round 1, they size each other up before throwing a few bombs. Howard lands a solid left before they clinch again. Howard gets a take down, but is immediately up kicked inthe face. Nick seizes the opportunity, lifting Howard up and smalling him hard, now in closed guard. Not too much striking, but Howard postitios himself for an armbar but to not avail. Howard then lands two stiff shots to Nick's face. With 1:15 left, Howard gets a tight triangle right in his own corner. Nick postures up and throws punches whil in the submission, he survives the round.

Rd 2, 10-9 Howard

Howard connects on a stiff left that rocks Calandrino, and the ref almost moves into stop it. Nick then sweeps John and is in full guard. No action, and the fighters are stood up. Howard gets a takedown, but is almost put into a guillotine choke. The ref stands them up, and Howard moves in again. He lands a big knee to Nick's ribs, visibly hurting him. Howard then finishes it off with a few rights before the fight is stopped

Joey Guel vs. Matt Horwich- 185, Live Broadcast

Entering the ring, Horwich tries to jump over the ropes but his foot hits the top one and he falls flat on his stomach.

They meet in the center of the ring, trading a few punches that dont do much damage. They clinch against the ropes, with Horwich, then Guel landed knees to the opponents midsection. Ref Miragliotta separates them, but they go right back to the clinch. Good dirty boxing by Guel landing a solid right hand. Horwich works some knees in as they move around the ring. They separate again, trading a few shots each before clinching again. They ramin like this until about 20 second to fight in the round, when Horwich gets a takedown. He throws down several punches, but do not cause much damage as time expires.

Rd 1, 10-9 Horwich

Suave lands a one, two combo then goes for a takedown but is stuffed. Guel throws a few punches before they tie up in the corner. They clinch for about 30 seconds until Miragliotta splits them up. Horwich goes for a takedown but is stopped again. Suave kicks Guel in the midsection, then follows it up with a right to the face. Guel then goes for a takedown, but results in more clinching in the corner. The ref has to step in again, Horwich lands some good punches, then geta a takedown, in full guard. Guel is active on the bottom, but cannot get off his back before the bell rings.

Rd 2 10-9 Horwich

Horwich goes for a quick takedown, landing in side control. He quickly advances to side control. For the next 3 minutes Horwich lands an occaisional left hand, then switching his posture to retain position. Guel doesn't do much off his back. With 20 seconds left, the ref stands them up. Guel throws a right and left kick to Suave's midsection, but doesn't do much.

Josh Souder vs. Zac George, 155

Both guys start out swinging for the fences. Souder throws a few before they clinch up. Souder drops George with a right hand, then rains down lefts and rights in the corner until Yves Lavigne stops it.

Danillo Villefort vs. Mike Massenzio, 185

Both size each other up for the first thirty seconds, Massenzio scrambles for a take down but is stuffed. Villefort throws a head kick that is blocked. Mike gets the takdown, in open guard. Danillo works for a triangle choke, showing good flexibility off his back. Mike keeps the pressure, throwing a few lefts to avoid the sub. Both wrestle around on the gournd, Villefort eventually grabs ahold of Mike's left leg and finishes off the submission.

Middleweight Title Fight Dan Miller vs. Ryan McGivern

Miller starts big with a left hook, then a right leg kick. Both shadow bix eachother for a little before eding up in a clinch. McGivern lands a nice body punch, and they separate. Ryan is finding his range, landing his jab well. Miller, the submission figher, hasn't looked for a takdwon at this point, as they both stand and bang. As they clinch, Miller then falls on top of Ryan who at first has a guillotine, but lets it go. Miller postures up, but eats an upkick by the camp before going back to open guard. McGivern goes on top, but Miller gets ahold of his leg, locking the submission in tight. Ryan quickly taps.

Lightweight Title Fight Deividas Taurosevicius vs. Ryan Schultz

They meet in the center of the ring, feelings each other out for the first thirty seconds. Deividas nails a stiff right leg kick, and they stand around. Not too much action is the next minute, as they continue to throw kicks that miss. The few shots that did conect left welts on their bodies. Deivdias goes for a takedown but misses, throws another kick and follows up with a stiff right hand. With 90 seconds left, Schultz clinches in the corner. Rya hits a knee before they both exchange hard right hands. The challenger clinches again, kneeing the champ in the thighs several times. They end the round i the center of the ring sizing each other up.

Round One 10-9 Taurosevicius

Deividas misses a head kick before landing one to the body. The challenger is pushing the pace on the feet, with stiff kicks, followed by punches. They clinch against the ropes, and Ryan gets the take down, in open guard. Deividas is keeping Ryan close, not allowing to him strike at all. He then postures his legs up from his back working on a triangle. Schultz pulls out, and lands a hard right hand. Schultz tries to posture up, but is pulled back down into Taurosevicius' closed guard. At the end of the round, they get back to their feet and clinch.

Round Two 10-9 Taurosevicius

Schultz comes out and slams Deividas hard to the mat, ending up in open guard. The challenger closes up and throws a few shots from his back. Ryan passes to side control, but then is put on his back in the same position. Deividas isn't doing much damage up top, is controlling the action though. Ryan switches out to his knees, but Devidas goes to take his back, Ryan slips out and end up in open guard on top. The champ throws a few punches to the body ad th head, but is controlled well by Taurosevicius' jiu jitsu skills. The round ends with both throwing short armed punches from the ground.

Round Three 10-9 Schultz

They meet in the center, challenger shoots and gets the takedown, ending up in side control. Schultz slips out and they stand again. After ducking a right, The Lion gets the take down. In closed guard, Ryan still struggles with his ground and pound. Deividas postures his legs up, grabbing ahold of his right arm. For about 20 seconds Ryan defends, then breaks it by lifting his oppnent and slamming him down. Ryan ends back in butterfly guard. Lion passes into half guard, having more success raining down punches. With 30 seconds left, Schultz throws a stiff right that connects, and Deividas rolls on his back. Schultz capitalizes taking his back and sinking in the choke, but the round ends.

Round Four 10-9 Schultz

This round starts like the early ones, sizing each other up. The challenger throws a stinging right that shakes the champ up a little bit. Ryan then gets the takedown and gets side control, throwing solid punches. Deividas tries to roll, and secures full guard. They continue in guard with Ryan landing a few hammerfists as Deividas tries to posture out. The Lion takes side control in the corner with under a minute to go. More solid ground and pound as the fight ends.
Overall a great back and forth battle from both, lots of credit to Schultz to come back in the later rounds.

Heavyweight Title Fight Brad Imes vs. Roy Nelson

Note: Imes looks slimmed down, in good shape, while Roy looks like Roy.

They start looking to stand and bang. Nelson throws wildly, landing one that rocks Imes. Nelson continues his onslaught, until Brad thwos a knee. A minutes in, they contineu to pick each other off. Nelson throwd four straight haymakers that all land. Big Country's punches are moving Imes aroudn the ring. Imes hits a knee into the gut on Nelson. Both fighters are jabbing in the midst of haymakers. Near the end of the round, Nelson lands one final haymaker that drops Imes, he jumps on top and finishes the fight.

Good job Eric ..........Nelson has came a long way sice the first fight I watched him in, when he fought in The White Buffalo (I think) by the end of the fight they could barely stand up.

Looked like it was yet another entertaining night of MMA for the IFL.
