WEC Faber vs. Pulver live blog
By Samantha Roberts, FightTicker.com youth contributor
This has been one of the most action packed weekends of MMA in history. With my girls from Ladies of Pain cleaning house in New Zealand bringing home 2 belts.
Now the WEC is wrapping up the weekend with a card that is good enough to compete with anyone’s IMO. I wanted to size up a few of the match-ups before the event started. (Editor's note: Television coverage begins at 9 PM ET on the Versus network. Return here around that time for live coverage on this site. Hit refresh on your browser for constant updates.)
Chase Beebe vs. Will Ribeiro
Unlike the CBS event real MMA fans will be watching this fight and this one will most likely go a long ways or end quickly. Ribeiro trains with some of the best stand up fighters in the world and that’s where he will want to keep it. But as we all know Chase is a wrestler and he will get take downs, the question is will there be a big punch landed before he gets one?
Jeff Curran vs. Mike Brown
Both of these guys are well rounded and I think they made a great match up here. Curran took a loss to Faber his last outing but it seems to be the norm in the WEC. If Brown wins this though I have to wonder is there a middle man between Curran and the champ Pulver/Faber?
Kenneth Alexander vs. Razor Rob
McCullough has to be eager to get back on the winning track, and what better way to do it than by avenging a 2002 loss. Look for these to to come out swinging but with twice the accuracy as the Kimbo Thompson fight.
Youshiro Maeda vs. Miguel Torres
What a fight this will be! Torres shocked me by winning the belt I have to admit so I won’t underestimate him again. Torres will want to take him down quickly but with Maeda's size it may be a problem. Watch out for his knees!
Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver
Will Faber continue to clean house, or will Pulver stay unbeaten in the division? If Urijah runs through Jens like he did his last few there is no doubt in my mind he should be considered the P4P #1.
Dominick Cruz vs. Charlie Valencia : Dominick Cruz def. Charlie Valencia by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).
Jose Aldo vs. Alexandre Nogueira :Jose Aldo def. Alexandre Franca Nogueira by TKO at 3:22, RD2
Luis Sapo vs. Alex Serdyukov :Alex Serdyukov def. Luis Sapo by TKO at 5:00, RD1.
Tim McKenzie vs. Jeremy Lang :Tim McKenzie def. Jeremy Lang by Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 0:40, RD3.
Chase Beebe vs. Will Ribeiro :Will Ribeiro def. Chase Beebe by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28), RD3.
This really is a suprise to me. I thought Chase would climb back up to a title shot without a problem. You can really tell that the WEC is ran the right way and is not interested in pushing certin people on you. What a event I wish I was there in person!
Mike Brown vs. Jeff Curran : Mike Brown def. Jeff Curran by Unanimous Decision (All three 30-27), RD3
First up is Kenneth Alexander vs. Rob McCullough (155)
Alexander makes his way to the ring and the announcers are quick to point out that he holds a win over Razor Rob.
Then Razor Rob comes in the fans seems to get a little more excited about him. He is one of my favs in the division, I hope he regains his form.
Round one: Start out slow feeling each other out they really respect each other’s power. Rob gets him down a minute in. They get back up quickly. Alexander throes a nice head kick that’s partially blocked. Rob seems really weary of Alexander’s kicks and the crowd is starting to boo. !:00 to go they clinch up but quickly back away. Rob has a small cut under his right eye. I score it 10-9 for Alexander.
Round 2 they are clinched and go to the ground but come back up quickly Rob is really starting to squint like he is having trouble seeing? Alexander through a beautiful kick over Robs head. Rob is just missing with some hard knees. Now Kenneth has the takedown but Rob is saved by the bell. Pretty boring fight. I would say another Alexander round.
Round 3 Nice sprawls by Alexander to prevent the takedown. Razor Rob is not doing much. Kenneth looks like he is just ridding out the win. They are clinched in the cage now and a accidental knee to the groin of Alexander by Razor Rob. The ref is giving him recovery time. Now there is a since of urgency by Rob and he seems to be the aggressor. Alexander got the takedown he has him in the fence and now they are back up. The crowd booed the last 10-15 seconds.
Razor Rob won a split decision (30-27 McCullough; 29-28 Alexander; 30-27 McCullough),
Bad call IMO
Chuck Grigsby vs. Mark Munoz (205)
They are talked up as who is better the wrestler the wrestler or the boxer
Round 1
Chuck throws a lot of jabs. Mark shoots quickly but Chuck is good at sprawling. Nice uppercut by Chuck. Single leg by Mark he has side control but then to guard. Mark is landing some nice shoots now, back to side control. Wow almost superman punches wow Chuck is laying down. Ref stopped!
4:15 round 1 TKO
Who is better at MMA a boxer or a wrestler?
Danny Castillo vs. Donald Cerrone (155)
Cowboy was booed by the crowed when he was introduced in Donaldes home town
Round1: Nice knee by cowboy then a takedown by Cerrone into guard. Cowboy tried several submissions before getting a ref stop by Steve Mazzagati.
:30 second in round 1 by verbal submission
In the interview Cowboy said boo me love me whatever I’m here to stay!
Miguel Torres vs. Yoshiro Maeda (135) title fight
They looked like midgets in there with Herb Dean looking over them as they listened to the prefight instructions. The announcers and production seems so much better than anything else other than the UFC IMO.
Round 1: Nice take down right off the bat but Torres right back up and land some nice kicks and punches. Yoshiro takes him down into full guard but nearly gets caught in an arm bar. They are back up again and Maeda keeps dropping his hands as if he is inviting Torres in. A few small superman punches by Yoshiro. Torres is taken down again, but right back up. They are swinging bombs clear to the end of the round I would give it to Torres.
Round 2: Torres is dropped twice but hit Maeda the second time with a beautiful up kick. They are really pressing each other non stop. Torres is landing nice knees then Maeda switches it now he is going for a heel hook attempt. Both guys are going for a toe hold this is one of the best fights I have ever seen. Maeda let him up! Torres has his back but the round is over. Best round of MMA ever!
Round 3: They start out circling with jabs I am so excited right now! Both guys are still pressing but starting to show fatigue. Torres just landed a beautiful knee to the face. Maeda’s face is swollen bad I think his vision will be a problem soon. Nice takedown by Maeda, but he seems to be resting. Now the right eye is closed on Maeda! End of round 3
Herb Dean stopped it at the end of round 3 due to his eye
Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver (145) Title fight
First out Jens to ACDC what happened to his normal song? The crowd loves him but you can tell who they really want to come out.
When Faber came out that’s when the crowd started to erupt. Faberis sporting corn rolls and Mir was quick to point it out. LOL!
Round 1: They start out throwing leather with Faber landing a lot more of the exchanges. Faber slipped and Pulver quickly jumped on him. (smart move) Accidental poke in the eye by Faber but Pulver quickly recovered. Wow Faber is really mixing it up with kicks and punches. 40 seconds left and Pulver lands a few nice blows. End of round 1
Faber 10-9
Round 2: Faber accidently kicked Pulver in the groin right off the bat! After they start back up Faber gets a takedown. After a little work they get back to their feet the fans start chanting Fab-er..Fab-er..Fab-er Jens was in deep trouble for a moment eating leather then recovered and started feeding right back to Faber. Jens went for a choke then Faber got out. Faber is showing fatigue I don’t care how good his conditioning! Close round.
Round 3: Nice kick right off the bat from Jens they are fighting back and forth. Faber went for a beautiful lift and return but Jens right back to his feet. Nice uppercut by Jens Hooks by Faber now they are throwing bombs. Rib kicks by Faber now Jens has side control. Dropping elbows to his ear. Nice sweep by Faber into guard. The ref stood them up with 1:00 left the crowd unhappy. Jens had Faber backing up at the end of the round with punches.
Round 4: Faber looks gassed and went for a takedown but Pulver would have none off it. Jens is squinting his right eye a lot but seems to have the fresher legs. Nice take down by Faber into full guard he is throwing a few elbows. Faber is covering Pulvers mouth with his hand to mess up his breathing. Jens seems to be hanging on hoping the ref will stand them up and the round ended.
Round 5: Jens starts it off going for a takedown but can’t get it. Nice jabs by Faber the round is slipping away and Pulver is not working for the KO yet? Faber just ate a round house that seemed to sting a little he backed up and regrouped, but now he is back pushing the pace. With: 30 left Faber got the take down to secure the victory and surely earn him the P4P title.

This could really catapult The WEC into a new territory and they certainly deserve the exposure. I have always enjoyed their televised shows, their production is great and Frank Mir has grown by leaps and bounds as an announcer.

Did anyone else catch the comment, "These are the elite of mma." Nice subtle dig at last night's show...
Charlie Valencia vs.
Charlie Valencia vs. Dominick Cruz opens the show
Cruz used his length and reach to connect more with punches and knees that had Valencia in some trouble in the first round.
All standing in round two. Cruz connecting more. He went for a takedown but couldn't get it at the end of the second round. Valencia got the best punch of the round with a right counter to the face.
Valencia rushed out strong. Cruz again connecting more due to reach. Cruz rocked him with punches including a hard left. Another good left by Cruz. Valencia with a low kick off a counter. Valnecia snuck a punch in. Cruz is moving better and throwing much more. Cruz continues to connect although Valencia's shots seem to have more power but he can't get inside.
Scores 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 for Cruz.
Jose Aldo vs. Alexandre Franca Nogueira is next.
Nogueira is the guillotine master. Crowd booing them after 30 seconds. This is very much a pro wrestling style crowd more than a UFC crowd in look and also reactions. Aldo movinig foward. Nogueira tried to get an ankle pick but Aldo stepped out of it. Aldo with a high kick blocked by Nogueira's forearm. Crowd booing some more. Aldo with a flurry, most blocked. Aldo's round but crowd booing both men heavily.
Aldo moving forward. Nogueira tried a takedown, didn't get it. Aldo pounding from the top hard. Crowd going nuts for the ground and pound. Nogueira is cut. Hard elbow by Aldo. Another hard elbow to the nose. More punches and elbows by Aldo before ref Steve Mazzagatti waved it off.
Luis Sapo vs. Alex Serdyukov is next.
Sapo seesm much quicker, but also looks a lot smaller. He cracked Serdyukov with a right. He keeps connecting with rights. Serdyukov is moving forward but can't catch Sapo and Sapo continues to counter well. Crowd booing again. Sapo continues to connect but Serkduukov keeps movin forwrd. Sapo slipped as he was moving backwards and fell to his back. Serdyukov has side control and now a full mount with 22 seconds left. He was doing some good ground and pound in the final seconds. Sapo seemed out of it when he went to his corner and ref Herb Dean called it off on advice from the doctor between rounds.
Jeremy Lang vs. Tim McKenzie is next up.
Crowd into McKenzie since he's from Stockton. Lang rushed him into the corner and gave him a high powerslam and is in half guard. Lang got full mount. Lang tried a guillotine. Now punching but McKenzie got back to his feet as Lang is still trying for the guillotine. Lang got him back down. McKenzie sliced up Lang from the bottom with an elbow. Lang is hiding his head but lots of blood on McKenzie's body. Lang's round but that's a sick cut on the top of Lang's head.
McKenzie gained confidence but Lang picked him up in something of a Matt Hughes slam. Lang got behind himm and is working for a choke. Huge pop as McKenzie got out of trouble. Lang is working for front headlock and got his back again and again trying for a choke. McKenzie escaped again. McKenzie on top throwing punches and elbows. Place going nuts. Lang looks tired. But he still got another slam and is on top in the guard. Lang was doing decent ground and pound late. I've got Lang 20-18 but McKenzie has done more damage.
Lang with a knee low. Crowd hates him even more now. McKenzie got a chance to recover. Hard knee, McKenzie threw Lang down and grabbed a guillotine. He's got it and it's over. Gigantic reaction for McKenzie winning. Best fight so far. Hopefully it'll air on TV.
Chase Beebe vs. Will Ribeiro is next.
Beebe was the bantamweight champion before losing on the last show to Miguel Torres. Beebe needs to get this to the ground based on Ribiero's hands. Beebe conneced with a punch off a clinch and low kick. Great spinning kick by Ribiero. Beebe couldn't take him down. Flying front kick by Ribiero and he grabbed a guillotine. Beebe back to his feet and rocked Ribiero with a punch off a clinch. Nice right cross by Ribiero. Another spin kick by Ribiero. Beebe tried a flashy kicks. Beebe got a slam but in doing so, Ribiero again locked in a guillotine. Beebe popped out and now has top posoition. He needs to get busy to win the round. Ribiero with a flurry. He hit a spinning backfist, Beebe got a takedown and Ribiero again went for a guillotine. Ribiero's round. Hell of a round.
Beebe with a takedown and again Ribiero went for a guillotine. Beebe got out and now has Ribiero's back. He's trying to get a choke but Ribiero is defending well and is not in trouble. Slow round. Poeple will start booing soon. Ribiero reversed and is on top. Flying fist drop and pounding by Ribiero. Good body shot and knee by Ribiero. Ribiero took Beebe down. Beebe reversed and got a takedown. Very close round. I think they'll give it to Beebe but I think even but I'm guessing round three decides it.
Spin kick to the stomach by Ribiero. Body shot by Ribiero. Spinning crescent kick by Ribiero missed but he got points from the crowd for style. Beebe missed a spin kick but it wasn't as cool. Spin kick to the stomach by Ribiero. Overhand right by Ribiero connected. Body shot by Ribiero. Beebe with middle kick. Beebe ent for a takedown and Ribiero again trying for a guillotine. Beebe popped out. Beebe has to work from here. Ribiero nearly got him in a triangle as he was punching. Beebe isn't doing enough on top in my mind to win the round but it's close. I have 30-28 Ribiero.
Tony Weeks 29-28 Ribiero, Marcos Rosales 29-28 Beebe (fans booed) Nelson Hamilton 29-28 Ribiero (fans booed that as well, go figure)
There's probably 11,000 here already, maybe more.
Jeff Curran vs. Mike Brown is next.
Curran connecting with kicks to the body and leg. Brown firing punches. Brown with a hard spinebuster slam. Brown punched the body a few times while on top. He's throwing head and body punches most being blocked. Knees by Brown. Brown should get the round for the takedown and some ground and pound but it's close.
Brown with a right jab. Curran with a few punches and Brown got a takedown. Curran had him tied up from the bottom and Herb Dean ordered a stand-up. Curran connecting with punches and a head kick. Curran this time tried a takedown but Brown ended up on top. Body punching by Brown. Brown mostly doing body punching. Crowd wants a stand-up. Brown with ground and pound. Curran never threatened with a submission. Brown is physically very strong for a 145-pounder. Curran couldn't reverse him. Punches and elbows until Curran used the cage for leverage to get a reverse, but Brown was so powerful he got off his back quickly. Hard elbows to the body by Brown. Definitely Brown's round. I've got 20-18 for Brown.
Brown connected with a left but Curran's footwork was better. Nice Muay Thai combination by Curran. A couple of punches to the head by Curran. Trading knees in a clinch. Brown got another takedown. Brown on top but not hurting. Curran tried to kick off the cage but that didn't work. Curran finally got a reverse with 1:15 left. But Curran didn't do anything dangerous. Brown reversed back at the bell. I've got 30-27 for Brown. Crowd half-cheered the fight but some boos.
All three judges had it 30-27 for Brown.
Danny Castillo vs. Donald Cerrone is next.
Castillo is from Sacramento so a big favorite. Castillo got the takedown. Castillo punching while Cerrone caught him in an armbar right in :30 from the bottom. Crowd booed the hell out of Cerrone.
