Randy Couture...arguably the greatest MMA fighter ever. But here is the thing. Randy makes good money to fight in the UFC. He signed a multi-fight contract and nobody can deny when he signed that deal he was making very very good money. The UFC has made Randy a very, very rich and famous man.

Randy has one fight left on his deal. Now a few years later the UFC has grown and they have brought in new blood. This new blood signed their contracts. This new blood is making more then Randy...unfair? Maybe, but Randy signed a contract and had the safety net and was given the opportunity to be the champ. Does Randy finish out his contract and then negotiate a new one like anyone else in the world? No Randy has walked out on his contract. Walked out on the fans that love to watch him fight. Walked out on the UFC which has made him a multi-millionaire. And why? Because he isn't the highest-paid fighter in the UFC. If you want to always be the highest-paid athlete in any sport you better sign really short deals for as much money as you can get because the way salaries in pro sports escalate that is the only way your going to be top dog.

Of course we all know that short-term deals don't work in fight circles because nobody wants their champ to bolt ot another league so they don't give guys on short deals a title shot.

So then Randy starts shooting his mouth off about how he wants to fight Fedor. Well Fedor, we all know, is either afraid to compete against the talented fighters the UFC has in its arsenal or he is so greedy he would rather not fight than take a pay cut. So what does Randy do? He tries to fight Fedor outside of the UFC knowing full well the UFC still has him under exclusive contract. So, of course the UFC says no. Randy says, well then I am not going to fight for you again ever, like a little 3-year old. The UFC says, fine but don't fight for us you don't fight anywhere. So Randy cries and we have to get lawyers involved.

How could this have been resolved easier? Hmmm, let me think. I am no legal genius but maybe...just maybe Randy could have manned up. Say back in what September 2007 fought who ever the UFC decided to put in front of him...Nog, Arlovski, Vera...whoever. Then walked. He then would have had no excuse not to fight Fedor. Fedor would have had no excuse not to fight Randy. Randy would have gotten out of his contract and made the last bit of his money, told Dana to shove it and fought Fedor in whatever venue he wanted to. And the fans would have gotten to see a fight many of us would love to watch. Hmmm. But I am no genius.
