Open comments up to non-members?
You as members of this site definitely influence the direction this site takes. So, here's a question. Do you like having the comments closed to members only or would you like for me to open up comments to non-members.
If I open up comments you're going to see more of the drive-by type comments you see at MMAJunkie.com, MMAMania.com, FiveOuncesofPain.com, and FightLinker.com, which all have open commenting. There's less accountability in the comments and discussions could end up being dumbed down. In addition, someone can leave a comment and never return to the site...
Of course, there's also the good possibility that some of the guests to the site will have good thoughts and spur even better discussion.
I'm open to all suggestions.

i'd lean towards keeping it a member thing.
if someone feels strongly enough about a topic to the point where he or she wants to initiate a discussion, join. its not like you spam the hell out of members or make payment demands or anything. its really painless. at no point have i ever taken for granted the fact that we do not have members that use internet speak, or posts littered with garbage english/text messaging shortcuts. i'd worry that the ability to post without being accountability could subject most threads to spam linking to other sites or "xxxx fighter SUXXORZ" ... or something equally inane.
It would be hard to do but if you could set it up were someone could post a few times before they had to register maybe that would motivate them?

I agree with Bosco. I like the community that has been established here at Fightticker.com. We have a ton of great back-and-forth debates. If someone comes to the site as a guest and likes what they see, it is simple to sign up and join in the conversation. But making people take the time to sign up limits the garbage posts that we would get from people just popping on. It seems to me that this little compound of MMA fans is on the verge of exploding into something big, and that is only good news for the site. The more true fans, the merrier. Those willing to sign up probably have something to say.
I'm definitely with TBC and Bosco on this. If people want to comment, they should at least have to take the time to register with the site. It definitely adds to the community atmosphere to do things that way--since people make more of a commitment to the site--and it provides good quality control on the commentary here as people are definitely more thoughtful about what they have to say when their name/handle is attached to it. Anyhow, it looks as if there are plenty of new folks joining every day, so maybe TBC is right and this is on the verge of "exploding into something big".
Great. Thanks for the input. I'll keep this thread open for more input but it looks like the consensus so far is to keep the comment system the way it is.
I agree with everyone so far. I too like it the way it is. The conversation on this site is superb and very, very engaging. I just wanted to make sure you didn't feel like you were missing out on the input of the growing number of guests who visit the site.
Eers, I like the thought about a trial system -- something to hook new users in and give the site and the users a way to evaluate their input. Let me think about how I might implement that.
pramit, i think that you should limit it to members only. if u let non-members post stuff, i think you'll get more trolls and people dropping nonsense. you've got an awesome site with lots of educated fans (who manage to stay respectful which you can't say about another site called sherd...eh, i won't drop other sites names). don't mess it up. you've got an awesome thing going on right now!
