Per the UFC rules, kicks to the head of a grounded opponent are illegal. There's nothing special about an up-kick, so as long as the opponent is standing up-kicks to the head are legal. If the opponent is grounded, up-kicks to the head are illegal.

All up-kicks not to the head are legal regardless of opponent positioning...

honestly, i thought up-kicks were ok as long as the recipient was on his feet... maybe the next time they re-air a bunch of TUF episodes from this season i'll catch it again, but i swear there was more than one occasion when people were being warned about up-kicking

It's interesting that you bring this topic up because I actually believe they've been lax in enforcing this rule. I find that there are times when a fighter is on his back and up-kicks the grounded fighter on top of him to the head. That's illegal but I often don't hear or see a warning.

This is the infraction that cost Anderson Silva his first bout against Yushin Okami. It was a very slick move, but alas it was illegal...

Bosco, are you referring to when an opponent is on the ground on his back and kicking up to an opponent standing? I was wondering this as well because I have heard the ref say "watch the kick" in this situation also. I didn't know if it was illegal to kick to the face or what the problem was. FightTickers explanation of the rules is good but I have heard the ref say watch the kicks many times on TUF and on PPV events and by that explanation they should be legal...why is the ref saying this then? hmmmmmmmmmmm!

cincy, i think you and i noticed the same thing ... ref's warning a downed fighter to be careful about throwing up-kicks to a standing fighter.

Yeah, I hear the ref say it all the time and I always thought up kicks were legal? They just say watch the kick or watch the upkick...no real explanation from announcers or anyone else as to why that is wrong or why they should watch their kick?

now thats just freakin cool. Fight Ticker just says "I'll talk to an actual ref for you guys" to get your answer. Do you think CBS would ever do that...HELL NO! Any questions on anything just get Ticker to answer them...want to know how hughes' cutting weight is going...just ask Ticker and he will ask hughes directly for you...he is that good.

ok ... watching the re-airs of TUF episodes before the finale
they just aired tim credeur vs matt riddle and it was a warning ageinst BUT tim was on his knees in top position in this given occasion. but riddle landed a couple of good upkicks (at least 1 legal, at least 1 with tim on the knees)
i think the warning was because tim wasnt on his feet
